Robotics is undergoing a major transformation in scope and dimension with accelerating impact on the economy, production, and culture of our global society. This brings new challenges spanning disciplines from sensing and perception, planning and control, to design, materials, and human interaction. Advances in this new robotics requires close cross-disciplinary collaboration over challenging task domains within a rich shared environment. Stanford’s research span and history of leadership offers a unique opportunity to help fuel this Robotics Revolution. The Stanford Robotics Center combines a uniquely equipped collaborative environment, a critical mass of world-class researchers, and an engaged consortium of industrial members in forging a powerhouse of robotic innovation.

The cross-disciplinary research in these areas will contribute a shared core of robotic science and technology providing a foundation to accelerate robotic development. Research and development in core technologies including design, materials, sensing, control, planning, reasoning, estimation, perception, modeling, human-robot interaction, haptics, and multi-modal interfaces will drive innovation in application areas.  These will be expressed within the Center through Flagship Projects coupling researchers and industry working toward demonstration of breakthrough solutions for the world's most challenging robotic tasks.

Robots assisting in manufacturing and service tasks. Application areas include smart vehicles, warehouses, and food preparation.

Robots caring for humans and supporting medical procedures. Application areas include domestic, educational, assistive, and surgical robotics.

Robots augmenting humans in hazardous or unreachable environments. Application areas include deep mining, underwater and space operations.
